“This is great I want to do it for a living”- An Interview with DANIEL LEA
1. What inspired you to join the teaching profession?
It was partly an interest in research and partly a desire to pass on an enthusiasm for something that I think is a great way to spend your life. I remember sitting in a tutorial in college spending half an hour discussing the use of word choice in a particular phrase in Hamlet and thinking to myself, ‘this is great, I want to be able to do this for a living’. I’ve always enjoyed interacting with people who are really interested in ideas and how books work and are prepared to talk about them.
2. What do you enjoy most about your line of work?
It depends on what I’m doing. I love it when a seminar goes well, because you feel that everyone, including yourself is learning something and you can feel that what you’re doing is making a real difference to people’s lives, changes that might stay with them or inspire them to think differently. If I’m researching and writing, it’s the thrill of trying to come up with something that hasn’t been said before and that my peers will think is interesting and original. On bad days both teaching and research can be a slog, but on the good ones, they’re fun and don’t feel like work.
3. Which part of the English course do you find the most interesting?
I think I enjoy teaching the Special Subjects most. There, you can do things that really interest you with a small group of students and because you have so much time with them, you can seem them flourish as what was difficult becomes more straightforward. I like teaching Contemporary Lit because it’s my area and for those students who are prepared to put in the time and effort, it can be a really exciting experience.
4. What does the average working week for you entail?
As academics we split our time between teaching, research and admin. As Field Chair and chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee I tend to spend a lot of time dealing with the admin side of things. This ranges from seeing students to taking meetings and following up decisions made. I’ll spend a couple of hours at least each day doing those sorts of things. Teaching requires preparation (honest) so I’ll usually spend a day before each session working out how I’d like things to flow (if I’m writing a new lecture that can take a couple of days too). I struggle to find time to get a lot of research done during the semester and tend to focus on that in the vacations, but it’s always there in the back of my mind and a lot of the reading I do that isn’t directly related to work is focused on expanding my knowledge of my areas of research interest.
5. What has been the most satisfactory point in your career?
Probably the point when my book on Graham Swift was published. Having a really good seminar is also very satisfying as it is people taking the time to say that they’re interested in what we did.
6. What would you change about the course if you were given the opportunity?
I think it’s important to keep the course under review so that we’re always offering modules that are up to date and relevant and interesting to the students we’re teaching. Generally I think that happens and bringing American lit online and Drama and Language work becoming more centrally linked to us is, I think really important and exciting. If I could change anything, I’d say that the modular system means that it’s difficult to have year-long courses where you can study things in greater depth. Studying the modern period without reading Ulysses has always seemed a bit weird to me, but it’s a question of time.
7. Are there any differences to the way you were taught at university to how you teach now? And have any other teachers influenced you in your profession?
Things are very different from the way that I was taught. I went to London University in the late 1980s and we were taught routinely in small groups. I started off in a tutorial group of 4, this was reduced to 2 in the second year and then in the last year you had one-to-one sessions. There were lectures and seminars but you generally produced work for your personal tutor and talked about it in your sessions. It was both intimidating and exciting because there was nowhere to hide but you also had the opportunity to discuss things at length. I’m always being influenced by my colleagues. We have a system of peer review and I really enjoy seeing how others teach, how they stimulate interest and get across ideas. My teaching has changed since I started out; I’m more interactive now and much more relaxed.
8. Are there any specific aspects of the course that you feel students do not enjoy? And if so what do you think could be changed to rectify this?
We try to pick up problems with the curriculum in Teaching and Learning committee and we respond to what students say. Generally we get positive feedback but we’re always prepared to listen when things aren’t right. As Field Chair I probably get a lot of the cases where people aren’t happy but I don’t think that there is one consistent area that students complain about. My sense is that students really like the third year and wish that they could have some of what we do there earlier, but the work is very specific there and really needs the kind of grounding we do in years one and two to make it make sense. I think students will always want more choice and hopefully with the new areas we’re adding we’ll be able to offer that. On the whole I get the impression that people are happy and that they enjoy their time here and one of the pleasures of being a lecturer is seeing someone progress from the first year to the third and gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. It’s also sad when they leave though.
