Students from a range of disciplines have been collaborating over the last year to set up 'OxVox,' the e-paper to allow you to be informed and involved with all the latest stories events and discussions. This web site is a Journalism Society initiative and is intended as a Brookes centric sounding board for anyone who has something to say about Brookes or Oxford city.
We think it is important that as an academic institution we have a publication that represents the student voice. We are currently using an online format as a forum to generate interest and ideas for the future launch of the OxVox newspaper. We greatly appreciate your feedback.
From the beginning of the next academic year we will be recruiting with the aim of publishing a printed newspaper twice a semester. We are looking for people to fill editorial, writing and photographic, business, marketing, and society committee positions. Please e-mail enquiries@oxvox.co.uk if you are interested.

Delia Smith has long since established her status as a household name in the realm of culinary expertise. With an unaccountable number of books published and endless television series’, she is more than just the familiar face in cooking within the past 20 years. Her gentle, almost pain-stakingly meticulous cooking, as formulaic as a military operation, has led amateurs tenderly through the processes of composing honest and healthy home-cooked food. The reassuringly soothing tones of Delia lulling us into visions of wholesome family food in the setting of a sunny country kitchen, however, appear to have dissipated like steam off her once home-baked treacle pudding.

Oxford has produced so many literary greats, particularly over the last century that it is quickly becoming as well known for its literature as it is for its dreaming spires and bicycles. The city has given the world authors such as Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Nancy Mitford, and Carroll. It was even the childhood home of World War Two Prime Minister, Nobel Prize Winner and author, Winston Churchill. As well as authors who will be known for generations, the city has also grown best selling authors. While too early to tell whether they will be remembered in hundreds of years, they are certainly recognised and admired today, Veronica Stallwood and Mary Hoffman for instance. It is well known amongst publishing circles that Oxford has one of the highest author counts outside of London. Read the rest of this entry »

On 26th November, a protest was staged against the Oxford Union’s invitation to Nick Griffin and David Irving to a debate on Free Speech. Though the debate went on anyway, the protests did cause an initial delay. The protesters argued that giving Griffin (leader of the BNP) and Irving (a “historian” and convicted holocaust denier) a platform to speak is to legitimise them and provide the opportunity to gain support for their abhorrent views.

I’d like to ask you to cast your minds back to the events of November 26th. The streets of Oxford City centre swamped in protest as it surrounded Frewin Court, the home of the renowned and prestigious Oxford Union: Oxford’s famous (and now infamous) home of debate, that has hosted a range of guests from Ronald Reagan to the Dalai Lama.
